Where it All Began

My first vivid memory of Warhammer, is being at a local mall in the San Fernando Valley with my mom when I was 5 years old, and walking by a store with windows covered in posters and action shots of some kind of futuristic soldier. Little did I know, that would be my entrance into the never-ending cycle of a Games Workshop cult.

I don’t remember every detail from my first Warhammer store experience, but I do remember how enticing the rows and rows of boxes looked on massive shelves way over my head, full of iconography and shots of futuristic, crazy bug creatures and super soldiers in heavy armor of every color imaginable. The very first box set I ever owned from Games Workshop was the 4th Edition Battle for Macragge starter set, with Tyranids and Space Marines.

I remember how much fun I had with that starter set, building the models, painting them, playing out my own grand cinematic battles in my room with my awesome new toys, and over the years I ended up storing the box and never knowing what happened to it. It wasn’t until I was towards the end of high school that I re-discovered the miniatures I had as a kid, and learned about the actual overall hobby. Now, as an adult with money I could buy whatever kits I wanted!

I introduced my then girlfriend to Warhammer, and together we began buying smaller model kits from AoS to build and learn together. The first army I got my wife was Sylvaneth, and she played them for a while before other armies began peaking her interest. Her two largest armies at roughly 5,000 points each, became Sylvaneth and Stormcast.

During our time within the hobby, between the both of us we’ve collected up to 1,000 points of every army in James Workshop’s collection. We had fun with each of them, and played them for periods of time before we wanted to try something new. It was during this time we met our current hobby friend group at our local GW, and learned how to play 4k with them. Once we made the transition, my wife’s first and favorite army was Sisters of Battle. My first army, was Grey Knights.

Fast forward 2024, and we’ve been fully integrated into the cult of plastic for almost 4 years, having collected, sold, and worked on, every single army available for Sigmar and 40k alike with our combined efforts. The first army that enamored me was Nurgle Daemons, and no matter how many armies I go through, they’ll always be my primary passion!
